More Than Wellness: A Gay Men's Wellness Retreat Built Around Coaching, Reflection, and Real Connection North of San Francisco
The word "wellness" has a complicated relationship with what queer men in midlife actually need. Spa treatments, cold plunges, and curated meal plans have their place, but they don't tend to address the harder questions that midlife surfaces: What do I actually want from the next twenty years? Am I living in a way that reflects what matters to me? Where do I find real community as a queer man at this stage of life? A gay men's wellness retreat that takes those questions seriously, one built around professional coaching, honest group conversation, and genuine connection rather than passive relaxation, is a meaningfully different kind of offering. The Midlife Men's Retreat 2026 runs Thursday, October 29 through Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Spirit Camp in Mendocino, California, north of San Francisco in the redwood wilderness of the Mendocino Coast. A Gay Men's Wellness Experience Centered on What Actually Matters
Reframing wellness for queer men in midlife starts with an honest look at what the word usually leaves out. Most wellness retreats are designed around physical restoration: better sleep, cleaner eating, more movement, less stress. These are real goods, and the Midlife Men's Retreat includes all of them in some form. But the primary work of the weekend is something different. It's about coaching, reflection, community, and intentional living for gay men who want to be more deliberate about where they're headed.
A typical day at the Midlife Men's Retreat looks like this: morning meditation and movement to start, accessible to anyone regardless of prior experience, followed by breakfast and a facilitated group circle conversation that runs through mid-morning. After lunch, participants move into one-on-one coaching sessions and unstructured personal time, including the option to walk the private hiking trails or sit with whatever the morning surfaced. A second group circle conversation fills the late afternoon before dinner. Evening activities take place in the redwood wilderness: around the fire pits, under the trees, in the kind of informal conversation that often turns out to be the most memorable part of the weekend.
The topics explored during the retreat cover the actual terrain of queer midlife: navigating change, finding meaning in career and beyond it, getting what you need from relationships, building real community with other queer men outside of dating and sexual contexts, and living with intention rather than momentum. The group is limited to 15 participants so that each person receives genuine attention rather than being lost in a crowd.

Men's Work, Mindfulness, and the Power of Embodied Exploration
The practices woven through the Midlife Men's Retreat aren't assembled randomly. They work together, each reinforcing what the others open up, and the combination is more useful than any one of them would be on its own.
Men's work, in its contemporary form, is fundamentally a practice of reflection and community. It creates structured opportunities for men to examine their assumptions, their patterns, and their relationships in the company of other men who are doing the same. In a queer context, that work has a particular texture. Queer men's wellness has historically been underserved by mainstream men's programming, and the questions that matter most in a queer man's midlife, around identity, belonging, intimacy, and community, require a container that doesn't need those things explained from scratch. Men's work in a queer-affirming setting provides that.
Mindfulness, as it's used in this retreat, is less about achieving a particular meditative state and more about developing the capacity to notice what's actually happening in your experience rather than running on autopilot. Morning meditation sessions build that capacity in a practical way. Over the course of a weekend, participants often report a noticeable shift in how they're moving through the day, more present, less reactive, more able to catch themselves when old patterns are running. That's not a mystical claim. It's a fairly consistent outcome of even short periods of structured mindfulness practice in a retreat setting.
Movement and yoga, as they appear in the morning sessions, serve a specific function beyond physical exercise. The body carries information that doesn't always surface in conversation. A gentle movement practice at the start of the day creates a kind of internal permission to slow down and pay attention, which carries over into the coaching and circle work that follows. Somatic awareness, the practice of noticing how thoughts and emotions show up as physical experience, is increasingly integrated into coaching methodologies for good reason: it expands the range of what a person can observe about themselves and, by extension, what they can work with. None of this requires prior yoga experience or any particular level of physical fitness. It requires only a willingness to show up and pay attention. Research on holistic wellness practices for men consistently supports the value of combining physical awareness with reflective and community-based approaches, particularly for men who tend to engage more readily with embodied practices than with purely verbal or cognitive ones.

Meet the Facilitators: Jeff Sun and Andrew Blotky
Jeff Sun and Andrew Blotky are certified executive coaches with more than 1,500 combined hours of coaching and facilitation experience. They've worked with hundreds of leaders across industries and life stages, and both have spent years participating in and leading retreat programs. Jeff is based in San Francisco and Andrew is based in New York City.
The retreat they've designed reflects a specific approach: equal weight given to group facilitation and individualized coaching, with each participant receiving a dedicated one-on-one session of 80 to 90 minutes to be used within one month after the retreat ends. Their coaching style is non-judgmental and curious. They're not there to hand participants a set of answers. They're there to help each person find his own, and to create a group environment where that process feels safe enough to be real.
For those who book by July 31, an additional pre-retreat coaching session is included as an early-bird bonus, making it possible to arrive at the weekend with some groundwork already laid. Given how quickly past retreats have filled, that deadline is worth taking seriously.
"If you're looking to experience genuine connection with other gay men who are in the same stage of life as you, this retreat is that. Jeff and Andrew are incredible, thoughtful facilitators and this retreat far exceeded my expectations. Thank you so much for creating such an incredible experience!" - Past Participant
A note worth reading: Jeff and Andrew are certified coaches, not licensed therapists. Many participants find this retreat deeply meaningful, and that's a natural outcome of intentional group work done well. That said, this is not a recovery program, and the group programming is not designed for deep individual trauma processing. If that's the kind of support you're looking for right now, they'd be glad to point you toward therapists or trauma-informed programs, and would still love to welcome you here when the time feels right.
A Wellness Environment Built Into the Land Itself: The Spirit Camp Experience
Spirit Camp is a queer-owned retreat center that lives the same values this retreat embodies: inclusion, authenticity, body positivity, and sober community. Nathaniel Reagan and Julian Cressman, the gay couple who own and operate the property, built the space with those values at its foundation, and you feel it in the way the campus is run.
The physical environment is a genuine wellness asset in its own right. Twenty-seven acres of second-growth redwood forest, private hiking trails, open meadows with fire pits, and the ridge-line setting that delivers a mix of warm sun and cool shade depending on where you are on the property. The Sanctuary, with its copper roof and south-facing windows, offers a space for quiet reflection between sessions that has a quality most retreat centers don't manage: it actually feels quiet. The Redwood Lodge, built from onsite timber, is the social heart of the campus: six skylights, a stone fireplace, communal tables, and a commercial kitchen where Chef James Sant prepares farm-to-table vegetarian meals that past participants reliably mention alongside the facilitation as a highlight of the weekend.
Accommodations range from private cabins with oak hardwood floors and luxury linens to shared queen rooms to a bunk room that brings a genuine summer camp energy to the mix. The campus is sober and substance-free throughout. Everything, the food, the space, the ethos, and the ownership, reflects the same set of values. That coherence doesn't happen by accident, and it makes a real difference to how the weekend feels.
North of the Bay Area on the Mendocino Coast
Spirit Camp is located in Mendocino, California, approximately 150 miles and three hours north of San Francisco. It's reachable from Oakland, Berkeley, Palo Alto, San Jose, Marin County, and Sonoma County in two to three hours, and Santa Rosa Airport is approximately two hours away. San Francisco International and Oakland International are each about three hours out.
October and November are excellent months to visit the Mendocino Coast. The temperatures are cooler but manageable, the dramatic coastal light that characterizes fall in Northern California is at its best, and the tourist season has wound down enough that the area has a quieter, more intimate quality. The camp sits just ten minutes from the town of Mendocino itself, where you'll find good coffee, local provisions, and coastal walking access for any time before or after the retreat. The retreat team can help coordinate Bay Area carpooling for participants coming from San Francisco and nearby cities.

Best Gay Men's Wellness Retreats North of San Francisco: What to Look For
When you're evaluating a gay men's coaching retreat or any men's wellness experience, the questions worth asking are fairly specific. Who are the facilitators and what is their actual training? How large is the group? Is the venue aligned with the values being offered? What happens after the weekend ends? The Midlife Men's Retreat answers all of those questions well: certified coaches with lived experience as queer men in midlife, a hard cap of 15 participants, a queer-owned venue built for this work, and a follow-on coaching session designed to sustain what the weekend opens up.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from a typical wellness retreat or yoga retreat?
The primary focus of this retreat is coaching and group facilitation, not yoga or physical wellness programming. Morning movement and meditation are included as part of the daily structure, but they support the main work rather than defining it. The central experience is the group circles and one-on-one coaching sessions, which are substantive, professionally facilitated, and focused on the real questions of queer midlife. What accommodation options are available, and what do they include?
Private queen cabins are available at $2,500, shared queen rooms at $2,000 per person, and bunk room spots at $1,600 per person. All accommodations include luxury linens. Bathrooms are communal and a short walk from each lodging option. Financial hardship pricing is available confidentially. Reach out to Jeff or Andrew directly.I'm a solo traveler. Will I feel comfortable attending without knowing anyone?
Yes, and that's actually the norm. Most participants arrive not knowing anyone else in the group, and the structure of the retreat creates the conditions for genuine connection quickly. The small group size, the shared meals, and the format of the circle work mean that by the end of the first full day, the group tends to cohere in a way that surprises most first-time participants.
A Natural Curiosity: The Pygmy Forest at Van Damme State Park
Van Damme State Park sits just south of the town of Mendocino and contains one of the more quietly remarkable ecological features on the California coast: the Pygmy Forest. A combination of highly acidic, nutrient-poor soil and poor drainage has produced a forest of ancient trees that, despite being decades or even a century old, stand only a few feet tall. Bishop pines and Bolinas manzanita that would normally tower overhead grow at knee height, dense and gnarled, in a landscape that looks genuinely unlike anything else in Northern California.
The Pygmy Forest is accessible via a boardwalk trail that makes it easy to walk through without disturbing the fragile ecosystem. The experience is quietly mind-bending: century-old trees at eye level, a forest floor you can see across, and an overall scale that makes you recalibrate your assumptions about how things grow. It's a short drive from Spirit Camp and a worthwhile detour for anyone with an extra hour before or after the retreat. The park also has beach access and a canyon trail that runs through a fern-rich coastal canyon if you want to extend the visit.
